Happy Labour Day 2016!

Happy Labour Day 2016!

Summer isn't just winding down, it's just about over. Tomorrow school resumes here in Canada.
As a new school-year begins it's a bit of a bittersweet feeling as it marks the of summer and the beginning of fall.

There is a lot to look forward to in autumn. For one thing, we have Thanksgiving, Halloween, and Remembrance Day to name a few!

I know it's been a while since I've posted any new poems or any news about my writing, but there is some good stuff coming soon, so stay tuned! Lots of good things are coming!

I hope everyone has had a happy and safe Labour day long weekend and has enjoyed the summer, and I hope your fall will be as good as or even better than your summer!

What's with the world these days!?

These days it seems like the world has gone mad. The things that have been happening the last couple of years are completely crazy and absolutely ridiculous; particularly from late 2015 to today.
You have already seen this poem before, but with all the chaos that has been going on lately I thought it would be appropriate to share it again, this is one of many peoples favourite poems of mine and I thought this is the perfect time to repost it!  Enjoy!

Who We Are: We are One (2nd version)
By: Vickram Bachan

The colour of our skin is clear to us, it is in black and white,
We are all humans, so why all the spite?

We need to be proud of ourselves and one another,
Our skin is like a suit that displays personality and character.

We are who we are for very special reasons,
We are the way we are and this is what we are given.

We are meant to be the way we are,
Each of us a sparkling, watery star.

Together, the human race makes a vibrant rainbow,
And when looked at from the heavens, we shine and glow.

Without peace that rainbow dies with silent woes,
For what racism does, I hope everybody knows.

We criticize the outside, seeing white, black, yellow, brown and more,
And we judge without understanding what lies beneath the pores.

Everyone's blood is red, the colour of life and death,
Though our true inner colours haven't been discovered yet.

Happy Canada Day 2016!

Happy Canada Day everyone!

This year our great country turns 149.  Last year when we turned 148, our flag celebrated it's 50th anniversary.  Next year is the big one, when Canada will turn 150! No doubt a lot of very exciting things will be happening to celebrate in 2017.
We will be getting a special commemorative bank note, and I am almost certain we will be getting special commemorative coins and stamps; I can't wait to see what they all look like.

And as I mentioned last year, there will be a special poem coming on Canada Day 2017, to celebrate and commemorate Canada 150. We are now exactly just one year away, and I can't wait to share my new Canada 150 poem with you!

Hope everyone has a safe and happy Canada day long weekend!

The 2016 Ontario Volunteer Service Award

My blog here is mostly for my poetry and information on my other projects in my writing career. I usually don't like to brag or try to feel important, but this is something I really need to say. I know this doesn't have much to do with poetry but it's something that I really want to share.

Tonight was an exciting night for me. Tonight I received a very special award from the province of Ontario. I was extremely honoured and proud to be part of the '2016 Ontario Volunteer Service Award' ceremony that took place at The Sony Center for the Preforming Arts here in Toronto.

As a recipient of this award, I got the chance to meet, The Honourable, Micheal Chan, the Ontario minister of citizenship; and Cristina Martins, the MPP of Davenport.
I also had my mom there; and of course the person who nominated me for this award, my friend who is a teacher at Carleton Village Public School, and my former teacher.

Mr.Grewal nominated me for the award for all the volunteer work I've been doing since I graduated in 2008, but more recently for all the work and time I put into the "Carleton Village 125th Anniversary" (CV125) in 2014 (including my poem: "Memories of a Childhood Era Past" which is featured in their special commemorative book).

I will always help CV in any way I can, whenever I can. It's my old elementary school of 10 years, and I don't mind giving some time back, wheather I get an award for it or not. CV was always good to me, I was always treated equally and with the same respect as all others students.

Vick with Davenport MPP Cristina Martins
It's good to know that all your efforts and hard work is appreciated and does not go unnoticed. I consider this award as a great achievement.

So, let me end by saying this: Thank you very much to my home province, the great province of Ontario. Thank you to Mr.G for nominating me on behalf of Carleton Village; thank you to the honourable Micheal Chan, the Ontario Minister of Citizenship; the Davenport MPP Cristina Martins;  our Premier, Kathleen Wynne; and of course, all of my supporters.

Congratulations to all my fellow award recipients this evening, keep doing what you do, your selfless dedication and hard work is an inspiration and helps make our province and home the great place that it is!

"‪Great Poetry Reading Day" April 28, 2016!

Yesterday was "Great Poetry Reading Day" and I hope everyone got the chance to, well, read great poetry. But reading great poetry shouldn't just be on one special day, it should be whenever you want, it should be everyday. So, if you want to read great poetry, you've come to the right place.

Visit this page anytime you would like, it is available to the world 24/7!
I don't post poems everyday, I can't post new poems on a daily basis; but from time to time, whenever there is a very special theme, holiday, or event, I will or may post a poem for you all to read and enjoy!

But with all that said, I hope everybody enjoyed "Great Poetry Reading Day" in some way yesterday!

Happy Birthday to the Queen!

Happy 90th Birthday to the Queen! Queen Elizabeth II, who is the longest reigning monarch celebrates her birthday just one day after mine!

As the world says, "Happy Birthday Your Majesty!"
I say congratulations on this big milestone, in just 10 more years she will be celebrating another huge milestone as she will celebrate her 100th Birthday. Will she make it there? I think she can, and will.

With that said, April has been a big month for Birthdays, so keep an eye out for a Birthday poem coming at the end of this month!

April Birthdays!

April has been a big and eventful month filled with special Birthdays!

On April 15th, two actresses from my most favourite movie series "Harry Potter" celebrated their birthdays! Emma Watson, who portrayed Hermione Granger; and Emma Thompson, who played Professor Sybill Trelawney.  (Honourable mention to the twin characters Fred and George Weasley, who celebrated their birthday on April 1st).

Today, I celebrate my Birthday!

Tomorrow, the queen, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, celebrates her 90th Birthday!

To all fellow April and Spring babies who are celebrating a birthday this month, I hope you have a great one!  Happy Birthday everyone!

And, keep an eye out for a new poem at the end of the month!

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter everyone!
The long weekend is just about over; hope everyone had a good one!

So unfortunately there is no new poem about Easter this year, sorry. Maybe I'll do one for next Easter, but again, no promises. All the same, keep an eye out next year anyway just in case.

Now, with Easter 2016 behind us, be on the lookout for more good stuff coming this year!

March 2016 update

March has been a bit of a busy month. Hope everyone who celebrates had nice St. Patrick's day on Thursday the 17th!  We also had International Women's Day Tuesday the 8th.  Kids everywhere are enjoying March-Break and having a little rest from school.

Coming up soon to end the month we have Good Friday and Easter 2016. I don't know if I'll be able to come up with any poems in time to post. Last year I posted two Easter poems but they weren't exactly my best, I kind of rushed them a bit. From now on I'm going to try to always take my time and make sure all my writing it good and to my liking before sharing it.

Don't get me wrong though, all my poems have been well thought out when written. But occasionally I tend to rush things which is not exactly something a writer is supposed to do. A creative process takes time; it needs to be done properly.

So, don't expect any new poem(s) this Easter, but never say never, keep an eye out just in case I come up with something, because we're still a whole week away after all.

Happy Family Day!

Wednesday, 10 February 2016

Last year in February 2016 I posted some anti-racist themed poems in celebration of Black History Month.  The poems were titled: "Who We Are: We are One" (V1 & V2), and "I Am Who I Am"
I also posted the story behind "I Am Who I Am".

I received a lot of positive feedback on these pieces of poetry, and I am glad that everyone enjoyed them so much! This year I have another different poem with the same kind of theme. I am proud to share it with everyone and I hope you will enjoy it!

New Poem Coming Soon!

February 2016

Well, it's February again; and once again the shortest month is also one of the busiest. Even though we are in a leap year which gives us an extra day this month, it's still the shortest and still quite busy.

As I promised last year there will be an anti-racist themed poem for Black History Month coming. It will be posted a little later on this month. We also have our Family Day holiday, I might also be posting a poem for that too.

So keep an eye out, lots of good stuff coming soon!

R.I.P Alan Rickman

Rest In Peace, Alan Rickman.

Today we lost one of the all time greats. Alan was a brilliant actor, best known for his many roles in movies, especially my personal favorite, Severus Snape in the "Harry Potter" series.

Like many, I did not even know Alan Rickman had cancer. Alan Rickman will truly be missed, he can never ever be forgotten. His legacy will live on forever in his amazing and brilliant work!
I had posted this poem (The Wonderful Afterlife) exactly 11 months before he died, and I couldn't help but remember and think of it when I heard the sad news.

The Half-Blood Prince himself will be missed, "Always", thank you for being our Professor Snape and bringing one of J.K.Rowling's iconic characters to life!  Farewell Alan.

"A New Beginning" poem, Happy New Year! Farewell 2015, welcome 2016!

Happy New Year everyone!
2015 is now over, 2016 just started.  I hope this will be a great year for us all!  Here is my brand new New Years themed poem, and my first poem of 2016! Enjoy!

A New Beginning
By: Vickram Bachan

A new year has just begun,
and the old one is now gone and done.

Exactly one week ago we celebrated Christmas,
the Holiday season was fun and joyous.

Some children are still enjoying their new toy with pride,
while others have already cast theirs aside.

A new chapter has begun with blank pages ahead,
We must now fill them so they can be read.

Time is an endless book called Life,
A continuous story, filled with joy and strife.

Life is full of tales that make up one big story,
It is always growing like a healthy tree.

Pages and chapters past are our memories to cherish,
What lies ahead is based on our hopes dreams and wish.

A New Year is the start of a new beginning,
it is also the continuation of an old ending.

So Happy New year, make your year great and go fill your pages,
Make your life an epic story, that will be remembered for ages.
