Proudly Waving 60 Years Strong

By Vickram Bachan

Sixty years ago, our flag was unveiled,

It’s raised each time Canada has prevailed.

Beneath the vast northern skies,

The Canadian banner proudly flies.

Iconic and legendary; a sign of democracy and freedom,

Our flag is a peace symbol, to all that come.

It represents a vibrant mosaic of all people’s and cultures,

It’s home to all of the equality searchers.

A growing community of all races and kinds,

Displaying us as one, a nation that binds.

From sea to sea, and across all the land,

A nation that’s strong, a unified band.

Equality, democracy, freedom, and peace,

Canada is a close to perfect masterpiece.

Opportunities await in a land that always thrives,

We are fueled by our passions, ambitions and our drives.

Welcoming new comers with hopes of better lives,

New opportunities await in a land that won’t deprive.

Red and white blowing majestically in the wind,

The flag of a country that’s kind and disciplined.

Through winter's chill, and summer's heat,
The flag remains Canada’s heartbeat.

The maple stands with quiet grace,
A symbol of this storied place.

We raise it high in joy or strife,
This flag, this leaf, this breath of life.

O Canada, in red and white,
Your truth flies ever bold and bright.

No crown or crest, no shield of war,
But nature’s grace we all adore.

The maple leaf, where peace will reign,
Unites us all from sea to plain.

It tells of peace, of standing tall,
Of answering our homeland’s call.

It marks a place that’s kind and free,
Built with hope and unity.

So let it fly through storms and sun,
The white and red for everyone.

For every soul, both near and far,
The maple leaf is who we are.

A leaf so proud, a nation free,
Forever bound, eternally.

In 2025, we celebrate our national flag’s sixtieth anniversary,

The symbol of us proud Canadians; we stand on guard for thee!

Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers awards ceremony

On September 24, 2018, I was awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers. After waiting 8 long years, today during national volunteers week, I was finally presented and invested with the honour at a very special ceremony in Ottawa at Rideau Hall, hosted by the honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada.

First and foremost, I need to thank my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for this and for giving me the strength and ability to be able to volunteer. I want to thank her excellency, Mary Simon, as well as the former Governor General, Julie Payette. I also need to thank his majesty King Charles III as well as the late Queen Elizabeth II, for this incredible and most high honour for Canadian volunteers.🏅🎖️🇨🇦🍁❤️
I look forward to continuing volunteering and making a difference in Canada.

Canada’s Volunteer Award 2024 recipient!

I have some exciting news to share today. Yesterday I received some unexpected but exciting news. I am one of the 2024 Canada’s Volunteer Award recipients in the Emerging Leader category! I am honoured and humbled to be one of this year’s recipients of the CVA! I will be receiving the award later this spring at a special presentation ceremony in Ottawa. This award, which was formerly known as the Prime Minister’s Volunteer Award, is one of the highest honours presented to volunteers in Canada.

I will share more information and news about this as I get it.  In the meantime, check out the news release  from the CVA. You can read all about the award here: https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/programs/volunteer-awards/2024-recipients.html
